The Shego Band is an energetic and versatile ensemble that combines Somali dance music, hip hop, soul, and dance mix with Somali, Arabic and Swahili lyrics. Led by singer and composer Shego Said, the Shego Band is a culmination of a long voyage through various music cultures. Shego first began playing the guitar in his hometown of Brava, Somalia and between 1980 and 1988, Shego and his brother Said lived in many different places, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United States and finally Toronto, Canada in 1991. The band is comprised of Shego the lead singer plays the Ud (lute) and guitar, his brother Said on keyboards, Mohiadin on congas, Scott Powell on bass guitar, Art on drums and Waldo on lead guitar. Most of the band’s members are professional musicians, while some of whom are producers as well. This abundance of musical experience allows them to craft songs that have come to represent a more contemporary Somali sound, which is still rooted in the rhythms and traditions of the Somalia of old.
