Thompson Egbo-Egbo

Born in Nigeria, Thompson Egbo-Egbo has been playing music since he was a young child. He arrived in Canada at age four and began to play piano at age six. He grew up in subsidized housing, so giving back to his community has become a focal point of his success. He was able to learn music because there was a free music school to give lower-income kids lessons; his creation of the Thompson T. Egbo-Egbo Arts Foundation continues this legacy.

Egbo-Egbo has earned the honour of performing for prominent figures like King Charles, Prince Edward, Prince Philip, and Quincy Jones. In 2007, he was commissioned to write a medley tribute to the inductees of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame; these inductees including artists such as Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Oscar Peterson, Joni Mitchell, and more. Egbo-Egbo has also portrayed Oscar Peterson in an episode of Historical Canada’s Heritage Minutes. Other than his music career, he also acts. He performed on stage in London with the Canadian Production, Da Kink In My Hair.

Thompson Egbo-Egbo released his first album Short Stories, in 2014. His approach to music is intuitive and pushes the boundaries of creativity while remaining accessible to as many people as possible. He is inspired by the changes and influence the COVID-19 pandemic had on the world, providing his listeners with catharsis and hope for the future.

Egbo-Egbo attended Humber College for their Jazz Performance program, developing his career during his studies. Still working as a Toronto-based musician, he is now enrolled at the Berklee College of Music. He served as a board member at Dixon Hall, and now is a board member at Jazz FM 91. His expansion into production and sound design resulted in his role of composer for the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre. His 2022 album Oddly Familiar, was presented in a docuseries at the Luminato Festival (entitled Golden Hour).

Bob Dylan, Radiohead, and John Coltrane are some of Thompson Egbo-Egbo’s musical favourites and influences. His most recent album, Oddly Familiar Volume 2, was released in 2024.
