Willi Williams

Willi Williams is a Jamaican reggae and dub musician and producer, who has contributed consistently to the greater body of Jamaican reggae music. He was born in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica.

He first recorded with Studio One in the late 1960s while he was still in school, after his introduction to Bob Andy, a Jamaican singer and songwriter, he recorded “Calling” for Coxson Dodd, an influential record producer. Only a few years later, as his career steadily grew, he and Bobby Kalphat established the Soul Sounds label in 1969. Some of the artists that he produced include Delroy Wilson, The Versatiles, and Rhythm Force. In 1974 he moved to Canada, where he would split his time between Toronto, Canada and Kingston, Jamaica.

It was then that he formed a close relationship with keyboard artist Jackie Mittoo. Together, they worked on the single “Armagideon Time”. Mittoo co-wrote the song with Williams, which was recorded in 1977, becoming a reggae standard to this day. The song was so influential that it found its way into pop culture, such as the 1999 film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, and 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The song was even covered by the Clash a couple years later in 1979.

Throughout his career he has worked with high profile names like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths, and more. Williams is still active today, and has released many albums over the years, his last one being Glory to the King, in 2020.
