The electric guitar playing Yaya “Alpha” Diallo uses compelling grooves and fluid notes to excite audiences internationally. Originally from Guinea, West Africa, Diallo grew up in different regions as his father was a travelling doctor. This led him to be exposed to many cultures and observing traditions from the Malenke, Sousou, and his own Foulani people. He also spent some time in Senegal with family from his mother’s side. While there, he learned the mbalax rhythm and combines its sound with influences from Cape Verde and the Caribbean.
Following high school, he became a highly sought-after musician, playing with The Sons of Ra’is and Syli Authentiqe. A move to Europe led Diallo to join Fatala– a group of African musicians recording for Peter Gabriel’s Real World Label. The group traveled and toured extensively throughout Europe, including the prestigous WOMAD Festival in England. After their 1991 tour, Diallo would move and settle in British Columbia, Canada, where he is currently based out of.
Since his 1993 debut album, Néné, he has recorded eight acclaimed albums and three collaborative albums. Néné, along with 1996 album Futur, were both nominated for Juno awards, and his 1998 recording The Message won the Juno for Best Global Recording. In 2002, he won again with The Journey for Best Global Recording and Best World Independent. His masterful performances have led to collaborations with musical companions Salif Keita, Baaba Maal, Youssou N’Dour, and Mory Kante. He has shared the stage with David Lindley, Thomas Mapfumo, Jimmy Cliff, Third World, and Burning Spear. His collaborations prove his talents cover a wide range of genres and instruments.
A man of the world, Diallo sings in multiple languages including French, English, and many African languages. CBC released a documentary about his works titled, The Best of Both Worlds, which is offered in both French and English.
