K’naan wins Best Song for Social Change Award from Recording Academy

Canadian-Somali musician K’naan won The Best Song for Social Change Award for his 2023 single “Refugee”. The award was presented the night before the 2024 Grammy Awards by the same body of the Recording Academy. During his acceptance speech, the artist explained that the Somali word for home is derived from the word mother, stating that “I would like to dedicate this award to my home- my mother”.

He left Somalia in 1991 with his mother and two siblings at the height of the civil war, first settling in Harlem, New York, and then Rexdale, Toronto. Music was used as a coping mechanism for the artist and he was often inspired by his grandfather, a well-known Somali poet.

The singer and lyricist is known for his politically charged rhymes and melodic tunes. His track ‘Wavin’ Flag’ was an international success and helped fund Haiti earthquake efforts as well as being dubbed the official anthem of Coca Cola’s 2010 World Cup.

K’naan has always used his music as a call to action for social justice therefore it is no surprise the artist returned after a 10 year hiatus with “Refugee”. The song is meant to shed light on the refugee crisis and as a refugee himself, K’naan hopes the song gives honor to the word, allowing for fellow refugees to wear it with pride. The Best Song for Social Change Special Merit Award was established by the Recording Academy in 2022 to honour those who speak to the social issues of our time and inspire a positive global impact.
